Smithfield Times Editor and Publisher John Edwards is a native and almost lifelong resident of Smithfield, Virginia. An "old school" journalist, he received his bachelor's degree in journalism from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1968 and began work in UPI's Richmond bureau. While in the US Navy, he was a part-time journalist for The Alexandria Gazette, The Washington Post and Virginian-Pilot. In 1972, he returned to Smithfield as Managing Editor of the Smithfield Times, which he and his wife Anne later acquired.
An advocate of First Amendment and access issues, Edwards has been a Director and President of the Virginia Press Associatino, a member of the Virginia Freedom of Information Advisory Council, a founding Director of the Virginia Coalition for Open Government. His awards include the Society of Professional Journalists' "George Mason Award" for First Amendment advocac,; induction into the Virginia Communications Hall of Fame, and in 2010 he received the Virginia Press Association's Lifetime Achievement Award.
An abiding interest in local history is evident in his involvement with the community and historic locations in Smithfield. He was charter President of Historic Smithfield, Inc., a fund-raising and project-driven organization instrumental in the town's downtown revitalization. He has served as a board member and now is President of Historic St. Luke's Restoration.
