Meet Meeting Speaker Robin Nicholson, Deputy Director for Art and Education
Robin Nicholson has been Deputy Director for Art and Education at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts since 2010, with responsibility for the curatorial, exhibitions, education, statewide partnerships and library departments. He was formerly Deputy Director for Exhibitions, a position he had held since 2006. Prior to coming to Virginia, he spent fourteen years directing and curating the corporate art collection of the Drambuie Corporation, headquartered in Edinburgh, Scotland, and with corporate offices in London and the USA. Nicholson was eduated at Queen's University, Ontario, Canada, and the University of Cambridge, England. He is a renowned scholar of the art of the eighteenth-century Stuart royal courts in Paris and Rome and has also published and lectured on other aspects of 18th and 19th century European art. His book on the portraiture of Prince Charles Edward Stuart was published by Bucknell University Press in 2002. He has also written for The Magazine Antiques, Textile History, and Nineteenth-Century Art Worldwide. Since coming to Virginia, Nicholson has worked on a number of major exhibition projects, including serving as project director for the VMFA exhibition Picasso, Masterpieces from the Musee Picasso, Paris, the most expensive and ambitious exhibition in the museum's history. He is currently directing a number of collaborative projects with major international museums, including the British Mueum, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and the Palace Museum, Beijing. Other professional experience includes serving on the board of the Virginia Association of Museums, cultural representative on the Presidential Bilateral Commission on US-Russia Relations, 2008 alumni of the Getty Museum Leadership Program, and past Chair of the Scottish Society for Art History.
